This is a unique opportunity to work in the Legal Department of a publicly-traded diversified energy company. AVANGRID, Inc. The successful candidate will be an integral member of a team providing legal counsel and support to Avangrid Networks and Central Maine Power Company utilizing global best practices.  This position will provide legal support and represent Central Maine Power Company on electric utility regulatory matters, including before the Maine State regulatory commission, as well as supporting other areas of the Company’s businesses. 

This position reports to the General Counsel for Central Maine Power Company and is located in Augusta or Portland, Maine.  There are no direct reports to this position.


•    Provide legal leadership and counsel on State regulatory proceedings, including drafting or review of filings and representing Central Maine Power Company in proceedings before State regulatory agencies in Maine
•    Advise senior managers within the Company on topics of concern to the electric utility business
•    Work alongside and become a trusted advisor to the business areas within the Company
•    Assist outside counsel in the Company’s defense of suits or claims and the preparation of the prosecution of the corporation’s claims against others
•    Prepare or review, as directed, contracts, purchase agreements, leases and other legal instruments to safeguard the corporation’s interests
•    Perform research and prepare and draft necessary legal documents and correspondence; monitor relevant regulatory proceedings
•    Analyze and organize documentary evidence and develop conclusions and make recommendations to business areas
•    Support the Central Maine Power Company General Counsel and the Avangrid Networks, Inc. General Counsel

Skills and Requirements

1.    Strong interpersonal and presentation skills, along with the ability to communicate effectively orally or in writing to all levels of the organization
2.    Strong negotiating skills with both legal and commercial issues
3.    Ability to establish and maintain strong relationships within the organization's legal department and across all businesses and with regulatory agencies
4.    Ability to work independently with little or no supervision
5.    Ability to mentor other attorneys in the department and develop best practices for the utility regulatory work

Experience as an attorney with a law firm, regulatory agency or in-house position preferred with seven to ten (7-10) years of practical legal experience as electric and/or gas regulatory counsel, preferably with experience in Maine state regulatory matters.

Bar Admission/Certifications: Admitted to practice in Maine or able to waive in, or otherwise gain admission to the Maine Bar.
