Associate Systems Engineer

Purpose
The Associate Systems Engineer will provide technical expertise for Avangrid Renewables’ Balance of Plant (BOP) facilities. The position focuses on Protection and Controls systems, RTUs, and NERC compliance. Travel and on-call support are required. This role is a Field-Work based position and is open to various locations, other than Portland, OR.

Protection, Controls, Automation, and other BOP support
• Design and program protective relays and controls, RTUs, substation logic processors, and associated systems.
• Analyze Protection System operations and assist in timely return to service.
• Perform Root Cause Analysis and corrective action for Protection Systems operations and BOP equipment failure.
• Develop technical specifications and scopes of work for maintenance, testing, repairs, and upgrades to BOP facilities.
• Assist in development and upkeep of design standards, procedures, documentation, and Aspen Database library.
• Provide technical assistance to internal and external stakeholders for a wide variety of projects involving BOP facilities.
• Perform rotational on-call 24/7 support (approximately 8-12 weeks per year)
NERC compliance
• Assist in the development and upkeep of NERC PRC compliance.
• Streamline processes, documentation, and evidence to improve scalability, program management, and automation.
Site work
• Must be willing to work in high and medium voltage substation and collector system facilities.
• On-site work may involve inclement weather, electrical hazards, climbing turbines and ladders, and occasionally lifting up to 50 pounds.
• Must be able to work flexible hours and travel for at least one continuous week.
• Able to operate a company vehicle and travel by air. A current driver’s license is required.
• Provide clear direction for numerous contractors performing on- site implementation work.
Approximately 20% travel required for this role.

• B.S. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering/Science or equivalent.
• 0-2 Years’ of Experience
• Working knowledge of Industry and Regulatory Standards (IEEE, NEC, NESC, NETA, OSHA, etc.)
• Working knowledge of NERC PRC Standards
• Solid and demonstrated understanding of elementary diagrams, SEL/GE relay settings, and protective coordination.
Preferred Qualifications
• 0 -2 Years' of experience designing Power Systems including protection and controls, RTUs and integration, substations, and/or OH/UG facilities.
• Professional Engineer (PE) license, desired
• Protective relay commissioning and testing experience.
• Working knowledge of IEC 61131-3 programming, or the fundamentals of procedural and structural programming.
• Solid and demonstrated knowledge of industrial communication protocols (DNP3, Modbus, SEL, Mirrored Bits, etc.), and serial/Ethernet network topology (OSI layers 1-4).
• Knowledge of EasyPower, Aspen Relay Database, SEL AcSELerator, Mathcad Prime, and AutoCAD.
• Demonstrated, hands-on relay/RTU testing and/or wiring experience.
• Experience in the wind generation field preferred.
