Purpose

JOB SUMMARY:
Scope of Work ‐ Main duties, settings, geography, reporting relationships, other relationships:Responsible for the safe and reliable interconnection of proposed distributed generation projects mostly in Connecticut (UI), but may include projects in Maine (Central Maine Power) and/or New York (NYSEGand RG&E) as needed.
Responsible for developing detailed substation and distribution upgrade designs required to safely and reliably interconnect distributed generators to the medium voltage and/or low voltage distribution system. Designs include electrical calculations, siting, and preparation of engineering drawings.The engineer will lead teams/projects that solve moderate to complex problems taking a broad perspective to identify innovative solutions. Able to work independently with guidance on complex tasks. Become exposed to and participate in regulatory matters and industry associations as needed.Follow updates and development in the power industry, specifically in the area of distributed energy resources, through training industry research.
Applies and interprets company, local, state, and national codes and standards and ensures Compliancewith regulatory requirements. Conducts feasibility studies, completes estimates and develops engineering criteria.

Responsibilities

Position reports to the Unit Manager – DER at UI, but the position will work day‐to‐day in a cross functional project team and support project needs as determined by the unit manager.
MAJOR ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (Scope of work ‐ range of responsibilities):
1. Perform detailed engineering analyses, designs and calculations using standard methodology & principles & other viable approaches. Develop alternate methods or design concepts to resolve problems or to improve processes/services. Independently apply design standards, industry codes, design criteria, guidelines & UI polices/procedures.

2. Solves moderate to complex Distributed Generation (DG) problems. Utilizes a broad perspective to identify innovative solutions (e.g. Customer generators, photovoltaic systems, fuel cells).
Anticipate & make recommendations using best practices with respect to customer & stakeholder needs.

3. Approve, maintain, & understand drawings (e.g. schematics, one‐line diagrams). Develop & specify equipment, assemble documents & other requirements for assignments of complex level
of difficulty using depth & breadth of expertise in own discipline.

4. Develop into an SME for generator interconnections. Interpret internal/external business issues and recommend best practices and/or process improvements. Represents Distributed Energy
Resources (DER) Engineering on projects, task forces and studies. Participate in Industry associations as needed. May be required to make presentations to regulatory/public entities.

5. Lead teams, mentor & review design and engineering work of others as practical. Specify & design systems to resolve problems in non‐std. situations & develop creative solutions. Explain
difficult concepts & influence others.


6. Possess knowledge depth and experience within distributed generation and understanding of internal/external business and regulatory issues as practical. Maintains knowledge of leading
edge techniques or technology through participation in professional associations. Able to communicate orally or in writing to regulatory and/or public entities.

7. Develop business cases & manage projects/processes/initiatives or teams in accordance with applicable UI guidelines. Coordinate phases of engineering for assigned portions of a
project/program.

8. Forecast, plan, schedule, monitor, control budget/estimates, construction plans and material orders. Assist in the management of resource allocation including developing forecasts and
plans to insure adequate resources are available.

Skills and Requirements

Education & Experience Required:
5 years of experience in Engineering.
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET (or equivalent) accredited
college/university.
Intermediate knowledge of distributed energy resources.
Knowledge of national and international standards, regulations, and compliance requirements
associated with distributed energy resources.
Experience with single‐line diagrams and site plan layout drawings.

Education & Experience Preferred:
Registered Professional Engineer or ability to obtain certification.
Experience with three‐line diagrams and control schematics.
Experience with circuit modelling software applications such as CYMDIST.
Knowledge of IEEE 1547 standards and UL1741 specifications.
Knowledge of FERC/NERC/NPCC and state regulations.
Specialized advanced training is also preferred (e.g. PTI, WPI , ECNE PUI, or a graduate level engineering degree).
