The successful candidate will be an integral member of a team providing legal counsel and support to Avangrid Networks utilizing global best practices. This position will provide legal support and represent the Company principally on electric and gas utility regulatory matters, including before the CT and MA State regulatory commissions, and the Connecticut Siting Council, as well as supporting other areas of the Company’s businesses, including its claims group. This position reports to the Deputy General Counsel for Avangrid Networks and is located in Orange, Connecticut. There are no direct reports to this position.
Responsibilities
Provide legal leadership and counsel on State regulatory proceedings, including drafting or review of filings and representing Avangrid’s electric and gas utility companies in proceedings before State regulatory agencies (CT and MA)
• Advise senior managers within the Company on topics of concern to the electric and gas utility businesses
• Work alongside and become a trusted advisor to the business areas within the Company
• Assist outside counsel in the Company’s defense of suits or claims and the preparation of the prosecution of the corporation’s claims against others.
• Prepare or review, as directed, contracts, purchase agreements, leases and other legal instruments to safeguard the corporation’s interests
• Perform research and prepare and draft necessary legal documents and correspondence; monitor relevant regulatory proceedings
• Analyze and organize documentary evidence and develop conclusions and make recommendations to business areas
• Support the Deputy General Counsel
Skills and Requirements
Skills/Abilities:
1. Strong interpersonal and presentation skills, along with the ability to communicate effectively orally or in writing to all levels of the organization
2. Strong negotiating skills with both legal and commercial issues
3. Ability to establish and maintain strong relationships within the organization's legal department and across all businesses and with regulatory agencies
4. Ability to work independently with little or no supervision
5. Ability to mentor other attorneys in the department and develop best practices for the utility regulatory work
Experience/Training:
Experience as an attorney with a law firm, regulatory agency or in-house position preferred with seven to ten (7-10) years of practical legal experience as gas and/or electric regulatory counsel, preferably with experience in CT and/or MA state regulatory matters.
Bar Admission/Certifications: Admitted to practice in Connecticut or Massachusetts or able to waive in, or otherwise gain admission to the Bars of Connecticut and/or Massachusetts.
Required Education: J.D. degree
Work Model: Hybrid work model- 3 days in the Avangrid office in Orange, CT and 2 days working from personal home office.
