Summary

The Lead Engineer will lead/direct the efforts of a team assigned to solve basic to complex problems pertaining to the repair of, replacement of, maintenance of, or new construction of, the electric distribution infrastructure. The Lead engineer will perform basic to complex power systems engineering analysis, design, and calculations pertaining to the repair of, replacement of, maintenance of, or new construction of the electric distribution infrastructure. Direct and guide department engineers to meet specified project/team goals. The Lead would take a broad perspective to identify innovative solutions. Work is to be completed with minimal guidance. 
 

Responsibilities

Perform basic to complex engineering analysis, design and calculations using standard engineering methodology and principles. Develop/present design concepts, determine alternate options/methods and create action plans to resolve issues or to improve processes/services of the distribution power delivery system. Be able to work independently with guidance on only the most complex tasks. Possess the ability to make presentations to corporate/regulatory/public entities regarding projects and design concepts. 
Serve as a subject matter expert (SME) for equipment of extreme importance to the distribution system (e.g., transformers, breakers). Interpret internal/external business issues and recommend best practices and/or process improvements. Instruct/mentor other engineers about the power industry, in particular the distribution system. Participate in Industry associations as assigned. Review and recommend improvements to the distribution processes, equipment, construction standards and operating procedures. 
Prepare, review, maintain, and interpret drawings (e.g., site plans, electrical schematics, one-line diagrams, material specifications). Properly apply design standards, industry codes, design criteria, guidelines, policies, and operating procedures. Recommend solutions and best practices for standard and non-standard situations to resolve issues or connect to the system. Identify/specify equipment; create and assemble construction documents; create a work breakdown structure and other requirements as needed for the successful execution of the action plan. Support, maintain and recommend distribution construction standards. 
Lead and represent Distribution Infrastructure Engineering on assigned project teams. Act as a resource for colleagues with less experience and provide guidance to other project team members on Distribution Infrastructure design. Direct and review the engineering work of drafters, designers, engineers, and outside engineering firms. Direct, follow and adjust the processes, policies and standards related to the distribution infrastructure to meet the customer and stakeholder needs. 
Promote cross functional teamwork on assigned tasks and projects. Assist in guiding and mentoring junior engineers and others in distribution design and engineering development. Work collaboratively and independently to specify and design systems to address specific/unique situations. Promote and follow the Company safety policies and practices. Accept responsibility for their safety and health as well as the safety and health of their fellow employees. 
Develop business cases for assigned projects/teams. Lead and manage small to large sized projects/processes/initiatives or teams in accordance with applicable UI guidelines. Establish and coordinate phases of engineering for assigned portions of a project/program. Plan, schedule, monitor, control budget/estimates, construction plans and material orders for assigned tasks and/or projects. Follow updates in research and developments taking place in the power industry, through training and industry associations. Provide training and guidance for junior engineers.

Skills and Requirements

Education & Experience Required: 

• BS/BA Degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering from an ABET accredited college/university 
• At least 7+ years’ experience performing moderately complex engineering duties related to electric power systems including 2 years’ experience leading an engineering team(s). 
• Project management skills are required. 
• Technical drawing or Computer Aided Design experience is required. Advance engineering degree is a plus.
