Job Summary
The Cross-Project Electrical Design Manager (EDM) is a critical role within the Offshore Renewables Business, focussing on the delivery of large-scale offshore wind projects in the US/Europe.
Belonging to the Project Services Direction and reporting to the Global Electrical Team Lead , the EDM will be responsible for defining and implementing robust and cost effective engineering strategies and plans, tendering, negotiating and managing $ multi-million offshore supply, installation and maintenance contracts, planning and implementing delivery sites and logistics, leading delivery phase including management of multiple offshore contractors and associated interfaces, defining company and business engineering standards and technical acceptance criteria, and ensuring quality, best practices and excellent H&SE performance are applied. The candidate will be managing engineering activities and decisions from a senior engineering perspective across the offshore project portfolio.
The individual will be working as part of a global business with activities in many countries across US, Europe and the rest of the world. The position may require some travel to various locations in the US and overseas and the individual should be capable of managing teams working at different project locations.
Responsibilities
- Develop the electrical design of the project;
- Management of the consultants or suppliers for electrical system studies and other technical matters including coordinating input data from ISO/TSP and other packages;
- Definition of main design criteria and functional design requirements of all main HV and MV systems;
- Ensure that the electrical system design process is clearly documented, in collaboration with the Project and respective Engineering Manager, in order to provide design justification;
- Ensure Grid Code compliance of the wind farm;
- Manage the interface with the grid operator (System Operator and/or Transmission Owner):
- Review the design and ratings proposed by suppliers of Export/Array Cables, Main Electrical Equipment, to validate that is in accordance with electrical studies, standards, specifications;
- Identify and manage risks and interfaces associated with the electrical design;
- Ensure corporate HSE policies are adhered to in all matters and industry best practice;
- Ensure compliance with IBERDROLA/ SPR design procedures and guidelines, or validate and document variations;
- Contribute to future revisions of corporate Specifications/Standards
- Report to the Project Services Electrical Engineering Team status, risks, and lessons learned;
- Ensure the promotion of innovation in the project if at all possible and share amongst other EDM’s/ projects.
Education & Experience Required
- Educated to degree level or equivalent in a relevant engineering discipline with a higher-level degree (e.g. MEng) desirable
- Registered Professional Engineer (PE) or Capable of becoming a PE within one year of start date.
- IT literate with the ability to operate MS Office systems and other IT based project management software.
- Comprehensive knowledge of health, safety, standards and environmental legislation associated with construction projects.
- Preferred substantial experience in offshore wind (or oil and gas / utility / power sector) of at least 10 years.
Skills/Abilities Required
- Knowledge and experience in electrical systems related to large scale offshore wind farms (preferred) and/or substations.
- Extensive experience covering:
- Plant interconnection and grid compliance (system studies and post construction tests)
- Overhead and underground HV Cable Systems Design and Installation
- High voltage equipment principles (Transformers, STATCOMS, Reactors, GIS, Harmonic Filters)
- Construction of substation (including Gas Insulated Substation)
- Relays and control systems
- Experience in factory acceptance test criteria and site testing / commissioning
- Preferred experience will also include:
- Wind farm controls and protection
- Wind turbine electrical systems
The candidate will also need the following skills:
- Significant experience in leading teams involved in large multidisciplinary work packages in international environments.
- Pro-active and diligent approach.
- Extensive experience in dealing with health and safety and environmental legislation associated with construction, marine and offshore projects.
- Proven experience in delivering large packages/projects, including contract management, programme management, cost and risk control.
- Sound relationship management skills and confidence working with Project Directors and Senior Management.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to influence and develop key project and business decisions.
- Excellent report writing, presentation skills and ability to summarize key concepts and drivers impacting the project and business.
- Sound planning and analysis skills with the ability to anticipate problems and implement mitigating/preventive actions.
- Innovative, creative, problem solving/conflict resolution skills, persistence and determination to succeed in overcoming obstacles.
- High capacity for change and experience of leading others through change.
- Proven ability in defining early Development Projects, giving accurate, concise and timely advice to development teams, including technical solutions and estimates.
- Makes recommendations on staff requirements to ensure delivery of projects (large packages) as planned and within budget.
